We are looking for an experienced Molecular Biologist Scientist who will play a pivotal role in establishing our learning platform aiding in the development of next-generation cancer therapies. The successful candidate will work in collaboration with a cross-functional team to create and develop next-generation therapy and treatments for cancer and rare diseases. The ideal candidates will have a good grounding in molecular and cellular biology with knowledge of gene transcription and control mechanisms surrounding gene regulation.

Candidate should have a Ph.D. Degree in Cancer Biology and have worked on Ovarian, Pancreatic and Brain cancer. And focused on the influence of environmental stressor on the genetic profiling of an individual which may altogether antedate the progression/development of cancer.  Candidate should have at least 8 plus experience of Cancer Biology and further would like to work in the area of Cancer Biology to evaluate the effects of anti-cancer agents leading to drug targeting or biomarker development and have published 20 plus research papers in various international and national journals. Experience of managing large-scale genomics data sets and well versed with various molecular biology techniques not limited to: DNA and RNA isolation, miRNA isolation and their expression analysis, Realtime PCR, RT-PCR, RFLP, AS-PCR, nested PCR, Multiplexing PCR, Gas chromatography, Analysis of pesticides and heavy metals in biological samples, Comet assay for DNA damage analysis, ELISA, Protein   Estimation, Analysis of Oxidative stress parameters, SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, DNA  methylation, Immunohistochemistry and Immunofluorescence, Microarray, Cloning and transfection, Electrophoresis, Animal experiments.

Excellent communication and writing skills,  manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations and also assist in grant writing and report submission to the funding agency in timebound manner, have ability to work independently for scientific research investigations including, concept making conducting literature reviews, collecting, analyzing data, and final presentation of project.

Comprehensive Exam

I’m studying for my written comprehensive exam that will take place next month. I understand that the doctoral program has different rules as to how the exam process goes (mine is 5 days and open book). However, I’ve psyched myself out sometimes thinking about the exam while simultaneously studying for the exam. I feel like I’m getting better at not psyching myself out. So my question: what did you do to mentally prepare for taking your exam?

Comprehensive exams are a massive, intimidating undertaking (for everyone) that marks the transition from coursework and being a student to dissertating and being a candidate. Everyone handles the anxiety of their exam differently (obviously). I was someone who thought about it constantly so it became harder to focus on other things, like taking care of myself and effective studying. Remembering to take breaks to eat and sleep was a struggle more and more as my exam neared. You have to fight it the best that you can; however, there are specific strategies you can take to help yourself!

Don’t sell yourself short! Think about other things you are good at—aside from the topic(s) on hand—before you study and right before the exam. Research shows thinking about other positive examples decreases anxiety about doing poorly on a test or task.

Make a plan.  Break study topics into chunks and create a comprehensive list of what you need to study. Rate each topic with how well you know the topic (strong, moderate, weak). Then create a study calendar with your available blocks of study time and be sure to include breaks. Fill in your study topics allotting more time for the topics you feel weak in, but also refreshing the things you feel strong in. Rotate your topic list around. Generally, you don’t have to study the topics in order.  

Decompress. Remember that breaks are important too, big and little, so include in this calendar your breaks and days off. Every now and then, take an entire day off to do something you enjoy; and try to de-stress, guilt-free (I know, it’s hard!). Take time to do things you enjoy, you’ll feel more refreshed and relaxed when you hit the books again.

Say no.  While breaks are important. Stick to your schedule. It’s hard to say no to important and fun activities, but this is important. It’s easy to lose large chunks of your study time with other distractions. Remember, it’s not forever so the short-term sacrifice will be worth it!

Take care of yourself. Sleep and a proper diet are key. Make sure the first day of your exam you are well-rested (don’t stay up all night stressing—which, I know is very hard to do) and eat well. By taking care of yourself, you ensure that you have the highest probability for success. You are prepared and ready for this. 

Remember that this is your field of expertise. Know that you know your stuff, and this exam is your chance to prove it. Give yourself a few minutes of silence and rest before heading in to start. Take these moments to recognize whatever you’re feeling and breath, and then roll up your sleeves and get in there. You’ve got this!

About the role:
As a Business Intelligence analyst and developer, you will be responsible for designing, developing, implementing and maintaining business intelligence solutions to support key strategic and operational initiatives within Liberty Mutual’s Safeco Personal Lines Agent Distribution & Service Insights organization. This position will require working collaboratively with technical teams and business stakeholders to ensure end-user needs for business intelligence solutions are met. Your end-users will be internal territory managers and Safeco executive leadership team members as well as tens of thousands of independent agents and brokers that sell Safeco insurance products.
This is a range posting, meaning we can hire someone as either a Data Solutions Analyst or a Sr. Data Solutions Analyst depending on skills and experience. The preferred office location is Seattle, WA with secondary office locations in Boston, MA, Dover NH, Plano TX, Indianapolis, IN, Fairfield, OH or Wausau, WI. We are also open to a working remote scenario.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop and maintain solutions that leverage Best-in-Class intelligence design capabilities
  • Assists in the design and development data solutions that enable effective self-service data consumption and can describe their value to the customer.
  • Improve accessibility to data via data aggregation, effective visualization and navigation improvements
  • Develop re-usable tools and assets to support automation, reporting and analytics initiatives
  • Produce accurate, consistent and timely visualizations by extracting information from various applications and systems, manipulating data and leveraging business intelligence tools to develop user-friendly outputs
  • Effectively source data into business intelligence tools to enable visualizations
  • Automate existing reporting and establish business intelligence best practices
  • Establish detailed documentation for all visualizations and technical solutions
  • Identify reporting and data processes that are inefficient and drive change that will lead to measurable gains in data quality and processing time
  • Work in partnership with other groups to develop automated visualizations in the most effective medium
  • Provide appropriate communication to stakeholders, including providing customer support for existing tools (ex: issues, questions, enhancements)
  • Conduct infrastructure design work efforts using a variety of analytical tools
  • Assists in the maintenance of proof-of-concepts and prototype solutions and assists in any assessment of their viability and scalability, with partnership from IT. Working with IT, assists in building robust systems focusing on long-term and ongoing maintenance and support.
  • Applies a basic knowledge of the principles of metadata, lineage, business definitions, compliance, and data security to project work.
  • Participate in special projects as required
Qualifications:
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • 1-2 years experience in coding for data management, data warehousing, or other data environments, including, but not limited to, working in NoSQL implementation, ETL, Java, scripting languages (Python, Perl, Shell), and the Hadoop stack.
  • Bachelors Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related discipline preferred.
  • Master`s in same or related disciplines strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of data architecture concepts, querying and data sourcing. Knowledge of SAS, MicroStrategy, PowerBI or similar database tools preferred
  • 1+ years programming experience in at least 1 of the following: Java, Python, C++ or similar language preferred
  • Knowledge of Big Data technologies such as Hadoop, HDFS, Map Reduce, Hive, Pig preferred. Highly developed negotiation, consensus building & influencing skills, facilitation and the adaptability to respond to change quickly. Ability to effectively collaborate with all levels of the organization and work both as a member of an Agile team and independently as required
  • Effective analytical/problem solving and research skills
  • Ability to manage tasks/projects with aggressive deadlines/time-sensitivity

My love of research emerged well before I received my PhD in Experimental Psychology in 2004; however, it was around that time that I realized how much my passion and experience could benefit others. This is what inspired me to create Elite Research, LLC, which employs statistical and editing consultants to assist faculty, students, and anyone else who needs assistance in conducting or reporting research. For the past 9 years, my colleagues and I have helped graduate students around the world through tutoring and workshops, setting up mock dissertation defenses, or even just acting as a cheerleader or shoulder to cry on during those challenging times. My goal for PhDStudent is to provide all graduate students who are seeking support with the tools they need to survive graduate school, a time that I personally know can be demanding and exhausting. When I do get some rare time for myself, I enjoy traveling, appreciating art, and making fun of my husband, whose love for Star Wars and The Princess Bride I will never fully understand.

I am a social scientist, and I focus on economic and political development problems in the developing world. After attending Friends University in my undergrad and University of Texas at Dallas for grad school, I finally have All But Dissertation status while working toward my doctorate degree and am currently employed as a research consultant. I’m a formally trained artist (my undergrad work), and when I rejoin the world (when grad school is over), I’d like to get back into my painting and collage work. Additionally, years of waiting tables in high-end restaurants has made me an epicurean – which turned out well for me because I married a self-taught chef and certified sommelier. My wife and I love to travel abroad, eat good food, and drink good wine. We have a wonderful daughter, Olivia, who has been the joy of our lives as well as a brand new baby, Adelaide. Hobbies I enjoy include reading philosophy, history, and sci-fi fiction; I’m also a huge movie buff and am really good at Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon.

I am currently a fourth year doctoral student pursing a PhD in Counseling Psychology. My areas of emphasis include multiculturalism, feminism, underserved populations, trauma recovery, and statistics and research. I know that last one comes as a bit of a shock from the others, but I am a true stats nerd down to the bone. My areas of research focus mostly on trauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, men’s violence against women. Other areas of interest include theoretical approaches to psychotherapy, evidence based psychotherapy, and third wave behavioral strategies. In addition to being a full time graduate student, I work full time as a statistics and research consultant for the university I attend as well as through a private firm. In what little free time I find myself with, I enjoy watching a variety of trashy reality TV shows, shopping for pointy boots, and attempting to have some kind of social life.

I’m Stephanie, and I’m currently about halfway through my MS in Counseling (LPC) at SMU. My areas of interest include trauma and abuse, mood disorders, and substance abuse as well as issues around gender, power, and trust. When I’m not working on research or as a part-time statistical consultant, I may be found playing recreational co-ed soccer or spending time with the coolest kid I know: my daughter, Sophie. We truly live at an amazing time in biology. I was just cutting my teeth as a sophomore animal science major when the human genome was released, which when compared to genomes of distantly related fruitflies and nematode worms revealed an astounding conservation of a core genetic toolkit across animals. I’ve spent my graduate and postgraduate career unraveling these molecular controls and how their conserved and novel use pattern a diversity of different body plans, from marine worms, sea anemones, lancelets, and now to frog and mammalian cells systems. As a senior postdoc at Stony Brook University, I now use frog embryos and mammalian cell culture to better understand core signaling pathways which normally control development, and whose misregulation lead to diseases such as cancer. I am also a fellow of a new NIH initiative, the IRACDA program, which is geared to train the next generation of researchers and teachers, and whose teaching component has me commuting to Brooklyn College to teach general biology. When not in the lab or classroom, I’m usually out exploring and fishing the long island sound on my kayak, running our local trails, brewing (or drinking) beer, taking a hike and watching the birds, or hitting the slopes.
